INSPECTOR GENERAL
Kamau C. Marable is the Inspector General for the City of Detroit Office of Inspector General (OIG), appointed on August 20th by the Detroit City Council for a six-year term. He has nearly three decades of experience in government, consulting, and management. Throughout his career, Mr. Marable has consistently demonstrated exceptional leadership, analytical, and critical thinking skills. He is a highly effective communicator and collaborator, with a proven ability to manage complex projects and multiple priorities simultaneously. His dedication to public service and his unwavering commitment to integrity make him an invaluable asset to the City of Detroit.
In his role as Inspector General, Mr. Marable oversees a team of investigators, auditors, and administrative staff, working to mitigate fraud, waste, and abuse in city government and contracting. He manages a substantial annual budget and collaborates with various internal and external stakeholders to ensure the integrity of city operations. Mr. Marable has developed and implemented policies and procedures for the office and has supervised the closure of hundreds of investigations, resulting in millions of dollars in restitution for the city. He has also overseen the debarment of dozens of contractors and individuals who have engaged in fraudulent activity.
Prior to his tenure at the OIG, Mr. Marable held positions in both the executive and legislative branches of the City of Detroit, giving him a unique understanding of city operations from multiple perspectives. Notably serving as Executive Assistant to former Mayor Dave Bing and Legislative Lead to former Council President Gil Hill. He has also founded and managed a successful political and communications consulting firm, Urban Consulting Group, L.L.C. Mr. Marable started his career in government in constituent relations working for the venerable Congressman John Lewis, 5th District, GA. From the District Office in Atlanta, GA, Mr. Marable managed the most critical issues, such as Immigration, Social Security, and Veteran Affairs.
Mr. Marable holds a Master of Arts in Political and Public Communication from Wayne State University and a Bachelor of General Studies in Political Science and Communications from the University of Michigan. He is also a Certified Inspector General (CIG) and a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE). Mr. Marable was elected in 2023 to the Board of Directors for the Association of Inspectors General (AIG). This national organization supports and advances the professionalism and integrity of Inspectors General's offices. They establish quality standards, provide professional development opportunities, and advocate for the use of Inspectors General as a tool to combat waste, fraud, and abuse in government.
